Home Remedies for Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is a common condition, affecting a large population in this world. It is a type of allergic reaction and the cause is when your immune system overreacts to inhaled substances and your body releases chemicals that cause allergy symptoms.  So we have listed some home remedies for you.

  1. Steam

Inhale steam regularly as it will help you clearing your nasal passages by clearing excess mucus. So, it will help you getting rid of allergic rhinitis symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose and sore throat.

  1. Ginger

Ginger has medicinal properties so it is used to treat many ailments. It has antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and it will boost your immune system. Ginger is used to relieve rhinitis symptoms like nasal congestion, runny nose, and cough.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is in our list of how to treat Allergic Rhinitis because it helps to reduce the risk of any kind of allergy. It has a very powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent with immune-boosting properties. It reduces symptoms of allergic rhinitis like congestion, cough, dry mouth and sneezing. You can mix 6 tablespoons of turmeric powder with raw honey.

  1. Garlic

Garlic contains a natural antihistamine called quercetin, which is very powerful and effective in treating allergic rhinitis. Garlic has antibiotic, antibacterial, antiviral and immune-boosting properties that help quick recovery. You only have to chew 3 to 4 raw garlic cloves every day to protect yourself from symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains antibiotic and antihistamine properties which make it very effective in fighting allergic rhinitis. It reduces symptoms like continuous sneezing, nasal congestion, and headaches. Apple cider vinegar also helps to maintain your immune system. You can take it with honey and lemon juice in a glass of warm water for best result.

  1. Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle is used for treating seasonal allergies, so it is effective in treating allergic rhinitis. It is seen that stinging nettle provides a quick relief from symptoms like nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing. You have to add 1 tablespoon of dried stinging nettle leaf to a cup of hot water. Now cover and steep it for 5 minutes, strain and add a little honey. Take it 2 or 3 times daily until your symptoms disappear completely.

  1. Oil Pulling

It is a very ancient technique that can draw out irritants from within your body that cause allergic rhinitis. It also removes harmful toxins. Put 1 tablespoon of sesame oil or coconut oil in your mouth. Swish the oil around your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes. Spit out the oil, and then rinse your mouth with warm water. You have to do this daily for a few months. Never swallow the oil.

  1. Probiotics

In 2013, there was a study by Chinese researchers, there is a probiotic called Lactobacillus acidophilus that can help reduce the severity of allergic rhinitis symptoms. You should buy a good quality probiotic supplement.

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C boosts your immune system. It has been proved that Vitamin C has antihistamine properties that reduce allergy symptoms. Eat fresh foods like lemons, oranges, broccoli, grapefruit, kiwi, bell peppers, potatoes, strawberries, sprouts and tomatoes.

  1. Saline Water

Saline water helps reduce symptoms of rhinitis. It prevents allergic reaction by cleaning nose. It is a good home remedy and very affordable. Use nasal bulb to pass water in your nostril. This process removes excess mucous and irritants. You have to do it regularly for best result.

  1. Quercetin

It is naturally found in plant foods like broccoli, cauliflower, onions, green tea and citrus fruits. A study has proved that quercetin reduces allergies because it calms down hyperactivity of the airways. It is evident that one has to use it for a very long time.

  1. Gluten free flours

Try to take gluten-free flour like coconut flour, almond flour, spelt flour, oat and rice flour instead of wheat flour.

  1. Bone broth

Bone broth contains many minerals and amino acids that improves the immune system of your body thereby reducing the effects and protecting your body from allergic rhinitis.

  1. Coconut milk

Try to avoid cow’s milk as it further complicates your condition so take Coconut milk instead as it is free of dairy, lactose, soy, nuts and grains.

  1. Almond butter and seeds

Almond butter is safe and healthy if you are allergic to peanut butter. It provides unsaturated fatty acids, fiber, minerals like magnesium, riboflavin.  Consume flaxseeds, Shia seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.

  1. Green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, collard greens, romaine, and arugula are rich in vital vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes that help reduction of inflammation and detoxifying your body. So even if you don’t like eating vegetables, you should add it to your diet from now daily.

  1. Lemons

Lemons make your body alkaline which balances your body function and boost your immune system. It works against allergies as it is full of Vitamin C and antioxidants.

  1. Yarrow

Yarrow also called Achillea millefollium is used to treat allergies. It is an excellent home remedy for treating allergic rhinitis and helps eliminating symptoms. It is an ancient Ayurvedic herb so you can get it in Ayurvedic stores. Add at least 10 yarrow leaves in a cup of water, heat it until it starts boiling, steep it for 3 minutes. Strain it in a cup and drink the tea.

  1. Flaxseed oil

Flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acid and it can be a substitute of fish oil. It contains anti-inflammatory agent and very helpful in people who experience dry eyes and throat. You have to take a single tablespoon of flaxseed oil every day until your symptoms improve.

  1. Castor oil

Castor oil is used to boost immune system and it has essential fatty acids mostly ricinoleic acid, which is known to have healing abilities.

  1. Hot and cold compress

It reduces the pain and inflammation in your sinus cavities. Place cold compress on your sinus and leave it for about 2 minutes then swap it with hot compress. It will certainly relax your muscles.

  1. Green tea

Green tea is loaded with anti-oxidants which relieve symptoms. So, to get rid of allergic rhinitis you should drink green tea every day and you will see the result in a few days. Green tea also reduces tiredness, fatigue, body ache etc. effectively.

  1. Nettle tea

It is a great home remedy to treat the condition and it has been used for a very long time. It is used for any kind of allergic symptom. You can have 3 cups daily for a good result.

  1. Honey

Although it is not scientifically proved but consuming local honey might help your body adapt to allergens in the environment. It is safe to consume and you can take it one or more times daily.

  1. Acupuncture

National Institute of Health ays that acupuncture may be an ideal remedy for allergic rhinitis’s worst symptoms. I t is an ancient Chinese technique to treat many ailments and in some cases it is highly effective.

  1. Face masks

To limit exposure to dust and pollutants you can put on a face mask as it will help prevent triggering allergic rhinitis symptoms. It is easily available in medical stores and online.

  1. Proper hydration

As we all know our body’s half weight is water so it becomes important to keep yourself hydrated. Keeping your body hydrated will protect you from allergic rhinitis.

  1. Avoid going to garden

Avoid garden during the season when bees are collecting pollen and every weed can make you suffer. So, hire a gardener to take care of your garden.

  1. Avoid your pets

You may find it very disheartening but it is true that some cats and dogs can trigger allergic rhinitis. So, make a different house for your cats and dogs.

  1. Vacuum Filter

To fight allergic rhinitis you should invest in a good vacuum filter with high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA).

  1. Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are useful as long as you keep them clean. A good dehumidifier uses heating and cooling system’s compressor to suck up moisture. But you have to take proper care of it as there might grow mold in the units.
