Home remedies for Anemia

Anemia is not a disease but it can be an indication of some serious illness. You need to first  go to your doctor for proper check up to confirm that you don’t have hemolytic anemia, sickle cell anemia or sideroblastic anemia as these types of anemia are to be treated. Along with medical treatment, following home remedies have been proved helpful:

  1. Sesame seeds for Anemia

Sesame seeds are one of the best home remedies to treat Anemia especially black sesame as they are rich in iron. Take a teaspoon of sesame seeds and one tablespoon of honey. Soak sesame seeds in water for a minimum of 2 hours. Strain and crush the seeds a make a paste of it, add honey to the paste, and finally take it twice daily for best result.

  1. Beetroot-apple juice

If you are suffering from Anemia that means you have deficiency of iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid. Apple is a good source of iron and beet is rich in folic acid, fiber and potassium. So, Beet-apple juice can be a really good choice for managing anemia.

  1. Blackstrap Molasses

Blackstrap molasses are excellent source of iron and folate which is a natural source of folic acid. This is a traditional home remedy to treat Anemia. It is also a good source vitamin B, and you have to take 2 teaspoon of Blackstrap Molasses, 2 teaspoon of Apple Cider vinegar and a cup of water. Mix apple cider vinegar with molasses. Add water to this mixture and take it once daily.

  1. Spinach

This dark green leafy vegetable is a good source of vitamin A, B9, E and C, iron, fiber, calcium and beta carotene. Take half a cup of Spinach daily to cure Anemia. Include Spinach for your daily diet and make sure you boil it as it contains oxalic acid and this acid can interfere with iron absorption in your body.

  1. Tomatoes

If you think that taking more iron can manage the condition then wait because you have to absorb it and to do so you need to eat tomatoes. Tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C and lycopene and Vitamin C helps to absorb iron in your body.

  1. Pomegranate

Pomegranate is an excellent source of many beneficial components. It contains protein, carbohydrate, fat, fiber and sugar. It is also rich in iron, calcium and other minerals. It helps you by increasing Hemoglobin in your blood and supports healthy blood flow. Eat pomegranate every morning on an empty stomach and you can also drink a glass of pomegranate juice with your breakfast daily.

  1. Dates

Dates are good source of iron (100 g of dates contain 0.90 mg iron). It is a good remedy to treat anemia because it improves hemoglobin in the blood. Dates are rich in minerals like calcium, manganese, copper, and magnesium. So eat dates daily.

  1. Parsley

It is also popularly known as rock celery and a culinary herb. It is popular and it contains vital components like iron and folic acid. You can eat Parsley with your sandwiches, make tea using parsley leaves.

  1. Liver

When you are suffering from Anemia, you need iron and animal organ like liver is the best source. You can also get iron from other foods but iron from animal meat organ can be easily absorbed by our body because it is heme iron which can be better absorbed than plant based non heme iron.

  1. Raisins

Raisins are natural and excellent source of many nutrients like calcium, potassium, sodium, protein, fiber, and iron(which is vital treating anemia). There are many traditional medicines which use raisins to cure anemia. A 100 g of dried grapes can give 1.88 mg iron to your body.

  1. Whole grains, Legumes, nuts

Whole grains, Legumes, and nuts are rich source of iron, and folic acid. You can take iron from these as well as from animal sources like meat. Half a cup of walnuts can give 3.75 mg of iron. You can combine your daily diet with both veg and non-veg foods.

  1. Bottle Gourd Soup

It has been proved that bottle Gourd Soup can cure Anemia in your blood. Take one Bottle gourd, take Beetroot pieces (half cup), Spinach (chopped) one cup, and take 2 glasses of water. Now to prepare it, cut bottle gourd in pieces, take water in a pan, add bottle gourd, beet root and spinach to the water. Cover your pan and let it boil. Boil it till it becomes soft. You can discard the pulp after mashing using a sieve. Have the soup now.

  1. Balanced diet

A good balanced diet is important for everyone. Iron rich foods like liver, seafood, molasses, beets, brown rice, whole grains, and poultry should be included in your diet. Foods which obstruct iron absorption like coffee, tea, beer, and carbonated drinks should be avoided.

  1. Wheat germ Iron Tonic

Wheatgerm is a portion of wheat kernel which is removed while processing refined flour. It can be used to treat anemia. Take 1 tablespoon of Wheatgerm, ,1 tablespoon of Brewer’s yeast,1 tablespoon of  Blackstrap molasses, 1 tablespoon of Canola oil and half a cup of Orange juice. Add wheatgerm, brewer’s yeast, molasses and canola oil to the orange juice. Mix it very well and have it 2-3 times daily.

  1. Yellow Dock Herbal Decoction

Although yellow dock root herb does not contain much iron but it helps to increase mineral absorption by your body. So, yellow dock root herb cannot cure anemia but you can prepare a herb with foods rich in iron with yellow dock and have it.

  1. Ash Gourd

Ash gourd is used by Chinese to treat anemia and they actually make sweet with it. It is also called winter melon, white gourd,  winter gourd, and wax gourd. It is a good source of vitamins and minerals like calcium, iron, phosphorus, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin C.

  1. Supplements B12 and Folate

Sometimes Anemia is caused due to deficiency of Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid, so you can take the supplements through your diet. Vitamin B12 is found in meat, egg yolks, dairy products, and sources of Folic acid are green vegetables like Broccoli, Brussel sprouts and Peas.

  1. Management of drink habit

Never drink while eating as it tends to interfere with iron absorption in your body. So, don’t drink tea, coffee, and wine during meal.

  1. Avoid Smoking

As we all know how bad smoking cigarette for our body and smoking is an inhibitor for absorption of iron. When you quit smoking you can observe that your level of iron in blood increases. Even try to keep a distance from people who are smoking as it can be more harmful.

  1. Avoid taking Antacids

Always avoid antacids after having an iron-rich meal as calcium and magnesium heavily found in antacid tablets compete with iron for absorption in your digestive tract.

  1. Steam Vegetables

Steaming vegetables can increase the bio-availability of iron contained within them. Make sure not to over-cook them as it might destroy nutrients in it.

  1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps absorption of iron in the intestines. To promote better absorption you can take the supplement of vitamin C right after meal rich in iron or just before meal. Vitamin C is not stored in our body so you have to take in on a regular basis. It is mostly found in citrus fruits.

  1. Cold bath

It may sound strange to you but studies suggest that taking a cold bath can help your body reach an ideal temperature required for the proper flow of blood to all parts of your body.

  1. Bananas

Bananas are good source of iron and potassium helping in stimulating the hemoglobin production in the blood. Bananas are easily available everywhere in this world and it is also called poor man’s foods.

  1. Herbal

Burdock root, nettle, dandelion root, yellow dock root can help you a lot. Make these herbs a of your life because these have medicinal values and can manage your Anemia easily.

  1. Drumsticks

It is a great home remedy to cure Anemia because drumsticks are rich in vitamins so you can add them to your diet. It taste really good and you will definitely love its taste.

  1. A good massage

Massage can improve the quantity and quality of your blood. A good massage can improve your circulation of blood and it is very relaxing for your mind also. Opt for a herbal massage as it tends to give better results.

  1. Indian gooseberry

Add 60 ml of fresh Indian gooseberry juice to 25 ml of honey. Drink this every morning to alleviate anemia.

  1. Milk and black pepper

Take at least 200 ml of milk and add about 7 black pepper balls to it. Boil the milk in an iron vessel and finally drink it. This milk is rich in iron and it will help you increase your hemoglobin levels in your blood.

  1. Sun Bath

A good Sun bath can improve your red blood cell count as it costs nothing to go in the Sun. Sun is the best source of Vitamin D.

  1. Figs

Take figs daily at least 3-4 of it can improve your iron level in your body as figs are excellent source of iron. You can soak them in water during the night and take them early in the morning on a regular basis.

  1. Burdock root and Dandelion

These herbs are especially useful to treat Anemia and both of them are mixed. These herbs are used to increase your ability to absorb iron from the food you eat.

  1. Iron vessels

Use iron vessels to cook your foods as it can improve iron in your food and ultimately improve your condition.

  1. Honey

It has been proved that honey is a natural remedy to treat anemia. It also improves hemoglobin in the blood so take a tablespoon of honey, lemon juice, and apple cider vinegar and consume them daily to cure anemia.

  1. Black Currant

Take at least 9-10 black currants and soak them overnight in water. Eat them in the morning and continue this for around 4 weeks. Before eating them make sure to remove the seeds.
