Home Remedies for Bronchitis

Bronchitis is not so serious disease as many people believe. Sometimes a common cold turns into bronchitis and it needs to be treated with care. It is a condition where lining of bronchial tubes becomes inflamed in the lungs. But with our home remedies you can treat this condition.

  1. Rest

The infection and cough cause fatigue and you become extremely tired. It has been proved that in this condition you should sleep a lot. Sleeping and taking rest will repair damaged tissue and grow new ones. Sleep will give you energy and ultimately bronchitis will be cured.

  1. Drinking fluid

It is advised that if you are suffering from bronchitis then drink enough fluid as in this condition you will become dehydrated. Taking enough fluid especially water will help you get rid of dizziness, headache and discomfort. Drinking fluid will not just keep you hydrated but also reduces mucus thickness.

  1. Humidifier

Humidifier raises moisture level in a room as it emits water vapor.  Cold temperatures tend to increase infections in the respiratory tract. Low humidity tends to irritate throat. So, you can inhale humid and heated air as it will help you loosen mucus and encourage to drain away.

  1. Quit smoking habit

As we all know smoking is injurious to health so we should avoid smoking. Smoking is one of the causes for bronchitis. Smoking actually damages your bronchial tubes. It also affects your body as it tends to damage resistance power. You should also keep yourself away from air pollutants, chemicals when you are suffering from bronchitis.

  1. A healthy diet

To avoid bronchitis you should eat a healthy diet. A healthy diet consists of vegetables ,fruits ,protein rich diet like lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, beans ,and nuts .Limit saturated and trans fat, salt etc. Taking a healthy and balanced diet makes your immune system strong.

  1. Honey and lemon water

Honey has many medicinal values and it has been used since ancient times to treat many physical problems. It has antibacterial properties. You can add honey with lemon water for great taste. Honey will soothe irritated mucus membranes. Never give honey to an infant below one year age.

Spicy food is a good technique to ease congestion by thinning mucus.  You can take hot chili peppers which contain capsaicin. You can also use condiments like hot mustard, horseradish and wasabi.

  1. Inhaling steam

You can inhale steam as it will help you loosen mucus .Lean over a sink of hot water with a towel over your head and breathe the steam. You can also add a few drops of essential oil like eucalyptus as it is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

  1. Gargling with salt water

Gargling with salt water helps you wash away excess mucus. Do it for 4 to 5 times a day. Even people who are not suffering from bronchitis can gargle, as it helps to reduce upper respiratory tract infection and eases symptoms.

You can prevent bronchitis by an enough supplement of vitamin Studies show that lower intake of vitamin D can make you vulnerable to bronchitis. Vitamin D is very easy to get as it costs nothing to get in the sun.

To prevent bronchitis you should wash your hands frequently. Use hand sanitizers to kill germs in your hands. Clean your nose and sinuses with saline nasal spray. Precautions will definitely help you prevent allergies and respiratory infections.

  1. Avoid dairy products

If you are suffering from bronchitis then avoid milk products especially cow’s milk as it contains lactalbumin, which increases production of mucus in the upper and lower respiratory tract in your intestines. If you drink cow’s milk it will result in excessive production of mucus.

Mullein is a very traditional home remedy to treat respiratory problems. It is used to clear mucus from your lungs giving you relief. Take a cup of water and boil it and drop two to three teaspoons of dried mullein leaves. Let it steep for at least 10 minutes and then strain out the wet leaves and drink the tea.

You can apply essential oils on your chest and message gently. You can also use these essential oils through steam inhalation or take use them in your bath water. Essential oils are very helpful for bronchitis treatment. You can create a blend of coconut oil with eucalyptus essential oils for message on chest.

Thyme is yet another but powerful home remedy to treat bronchitis and other respiratory ailments. It taste good and this herb comes with spasmolytic properties which help you fight against infections of bronchitis. Even in herbal cough syrup, thyme is added as an ingredient. You can add raw honey to it.

Drink it for three to four times daily.

There are studies which found that garlic contains components like allicin which protect us against infection.  Garlic contains vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B, calcium, iron and copper. You can take one or two cloves of it.

Turmeric is an easily available home remedy to treat a number of respiratory ailments like asthma, bronchitis and many more. It has culinary benefits and is very useful for your health .It has been found that turmeric can improve airway obstruction. It is a safe treatment.

  1. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a very effective treatment for bronchitis as it improves respiratory conditions. The spice helps you by targeting inflammation and in turn, reduces swelling. Just mix raw honey, ground cinnamon, cloves, ginger, black pepper and cardamom. You can add this remedy into your tea and drink it.

  1. Oregano oil

If anyone looking for home remedy to treat bronchitis then Oregano oil will be one the best treatment as it contains natural antibiotics which are really very powerful. It contains carvacrol which targets chest congestion and inflammation. It also provides antibacterial and antiviral properties and is used to treat respiratory ailments caused by viruses and even bacteria.
