Home Remedies for Appendicitis

Appendicitis is an inflammation of your appendix and it can be acute or chronic. Appendix is actually a small protrusion of the colon, located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. Mostly men suffer from it and every year in USA, more than 250,000 people go under knife to remove their appendix due to appendicitis. There are many causes for this problem like enlarged lymphoid follicles, intestinal worms, trauma and tumors. People who suffer from appendicitis feel pain in their lower right side of the abdomen, loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea and constipation. Timely treatment is required before the rupture of appendicitis. The best remedy is surgically removing the appendix but you can use our home remedies to help ease some of the symptoms of appendicitis.

  1. Basil

If you are suffering from appendicitis and have a low-grade fever, you can use basil to bring down your temperature. You have to boil a handful of basil leaves and 1 teaspoon of grated ginger in a cup of water until the solution is reduced by half. Now strain and add a little honey. Drink the tea twice daily for a few days.

  1. Lemon

Lemon is in our list because it is very helpful in treating appendicitis. The fresh citrus juice from lemon helps relieve pain and prevent indigestion and constipation. Simply, extract fresh juice from a lemon and mix it with an equal quantity of raw honey. Consume this mixture for 2-3 times a day and repeat this daily for a few weeks.

  1. Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds prevent the accumulation of intestinal waste and excess mucus, thus reducing the problem becoming severe. Add two teaspoons of fenugreek seeds to a cup of water. Boil the water, and then simmer on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and have this decoction when lukewarm once daily.

  1. Ginger

Ginger contains anti-inflammatory properties which help treating appendicitis. It helps you by reducing pain and inflammation. It also helps to get rid of common symptoms of vomiting and nausea. You can have ginger tea twice or thrice daily.

  1. Garlic

Garlic contains anti-inflammatory properties that aid in the treatment of appendicitis. Simply, eat 2-3 raw garlic cloves on an empty stomach every day.

  1. Castor Oil

Castor oil can be used to reduce inflammation, and you can take it orally as it helps in treating constipation. Castor oil improves bowel movement.

  1. Mint

Mint is a great home remedy for treating appendicitis. You can use it to treat intestinal gas as well as vomiting and nausea. It helps managing your pain due to appendicitis. Prepare mint tea by adding a tablespoon of fresh mint leaves to a cup of boiling water and let it steep for about 5-10 minutes. Now strain it and drink the tea 2 to 3 times daily for a few weeks.

  1. Ginseng

Ginseng has many medicinal properties and its anti-inflammatory properties are very effective in reducing inflammation and pain from appendicitis. Add 6-8 slices of ginseng to 3 cups of boiling water. Simmer it for about 15 minutes on low heat. Strain, and add a little raw honey and let it cool. Drink this tea 2 times daily for a few weeks.

  1. Drink a lot of water

You should drink a lot of water daily as it is helpful in treating appendicitis. If you drink adequate water, it will help you by promoting regular bowel movements. It also helps in removing toxins out of your body.

  1. Eat fiber-rich foods

According to a study in 2000, published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, low fiber intake can play a role in development of appendicitis. Fiber-rich foods like cucumbers, beans, brown rice, carrots, pumpkin should be taken daily.

  1. Buttermilk

To treat chronic appendicitis you can consume a liter of buttermilk daily as it is very effective in preventing the bacterial growth in your appendix.

  1. Cucumber, beet and carrot

You can consume cucumber and beet juices each 100 ml in 300 ml of carrot juice consumed twice daily as this can be very effective remedy for treating appendicitis.

  1. Green gram

Green gram is one of the best home remedy to treat appendicitis. To use green gram for treating appendicitis you have to take a dosage of 1 tablespoon of green gram consumed thrice daily.

  1. Wet sheet

Appendicitis is very painful so to reduce the pain you can tie a wet sheet and a dry flannel cloth on it tightly on your abdomen.

  1. Whole wheat

Consume whole wheat like wheat bran and wheat germ can be very effective in treating appendicitis. Whole wheat is very good for your entire digestive system.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antioxidant properties helping inflammation associated with appendicitis. You should include 400-500 mg of turmeric in your daily diet. But if you have to go under knife then avoid the use of turmeric as it can cause internal bleeding.

  1. Pineapple

Pineapple contains an enzyme known as bromelain that helps to improve digestion as well as reducing pain associated with appendicitis condition. So, Pineapple is in our list of home remedy to treat appendicitis.

  1. Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that make it an effective home remedy to reduce pain from appendicitis. Cinnamon has many medicinal values and you can add it to your food to enrich its flavor.

  1. Vegetable Juices

If you are suffering from appendicitis, you should consume carrot juice, beetroot juice and cucumber juice in a ratio of 3:1:1. You can also consume Coriander juice in combination with radish juice as it can have a soothing effect on the intestines.

  1. Almond oil

You can reduce your pain effectively by using almond oil. You have to use it as a massaging purpose. Use a hot compress over the abdomen. Take a towel and soak it in hot water. Applying this towel over the affective area will provide relief from pain. Afterwards, you can massage almond oil over your abdomen.
